About Us
The Church of the Living God was established in September of 1939 by the Elder W. A Tressenwriter. The first services were held on 9th street in Beckley West Virginia. As the fellowship began to grow, one of the followers, Sis. Katie Trundle who also lived on 9th street felt led to donate a piece of property that she and her sister, Rosa Hancock owned on 545 Broadway Street, and another parcel of land at 554 Broadway Street, just a few blocks over. The deacons, Brothers Dan Carrie, and Mason Powell and others built the church and parsonage for Elder W.A Tressenwriter and his wife Suzie from the remnants of old coal camp houses. The church began to grow. W.A Tressenwriter whom the membership affectionately called “Elder” selected Minister Virginia Powell to be his assistant. Upon his death in December of 1971 Minister Virginia Powell was elevated to lead pastor where she served faithfully until her death in December of the year 2000. However, months before her death Pastor Powell, anointed and consecrated her daughter Elder Clara Wilson to pastor The Church of the Living God and her granddaughter Elder Ann L. Oglesby to assist her.
Elders Wilson and Oglesby would go on to become bishops as they led the church. Bishop Clara Wilson served well until her death in September of 2023.
Bishop Ann Oglesby, become the general overseer where she continues to inspire the people of God.
Mission
To extend the kingdom of god by obeying His commands, saying, “Go ye therefore into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15. “Teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I’ve commanded you and lo I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:19-20.
OUR FAITH
We The Church of the Living God believe that the Bible is the revealed Word of God to man.
We believe in God the Father. Maker of heaven and earth and that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God. He was born of a virgin. He was crucified dead and buried. He rose again on the third day. He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God. 1 Peter 3:22. Jesus will return to judge the quick and the dead. We believe in the One True God in three manifestations. “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” 1 John 5:7.
In addition, we believe in regeneration by the blood of Jesus Christ. Matthew 19:28 Acts 20:28 Eph. 1:7. Also in sanctification, is an after work of grace. 1 Thes. 4:3-4 5:23.
Baptism
We believe baptism to mean total emersion in water. As John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. Matt 3: 13-17. We baptize in the “name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Matt 28:19-20.”In Jesus’ name.” Col 3:17.
